Activities for People‘s Development

The concern and quest for bringing about the general development of the whole person is characteristic of the work missionaries.  This is an integral part of the mission of the Church is developing countries.  Consequently, the missionaries established throughout the Diocese facilities for meeting the people‘s needs for development.

In the Diocese of Mahenge the work of missionaries in promoting the general development of the people has been most prominet in the sectors of health and education.  For instance, by 1969 when Church-owned schools handed over to the Government, the Diocese of Mahenge handed over a total of 58 Primary schools.  This represented more that 75% of the total number of primary schools of the two districts.  By that time the Diocese also owned one Public Secondary School for boys and one Seminary.  On the whole the contribution of missionaries in our Diocese for ascertaining the general development of the people  has correctly been recognised as being vital for the development of the people of this region.  It is still the conviction of the people of this region to date that the contribution if the Church in this regard is still very much needed.
